Strawberry Basil Lemonade

This lemonade is pleasantly tart and bursting with refreshing flavor. It is also easily adaptable to other flavors.

  • large jar (at least 2 quarts)
  • wooden spoon or potato masher

  • cups sugar
  • 2 lemons sliced
  • 3 cups strawberries (or whatever fruit is in season) sliced
  • 2 cups lemon juice bottled or fresh-squeezed will work
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 bunch basil, or whatever herb pairs best with your fruit crumpled--this will allow the herb to release its flavor into the lemonade

  • Use spoon or potato masher to mash sugar, sliced lemons, and strawberries together. The mashing will help release the oils from the lemon rinds. Stop when the strawberries are mostly liquid and the lemons are still intact.
  • Add lemon juice and water. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add basil and let steep for 1 hour in fridge. Enjoy over ice!

Even though I love strawberry and basil, other fruits and herbs can make equally delicious lemonade. Some of my favorite pairings are blueberries and basil, raspberries and lemon balm, and cucumber and mint.
While fresh fruit will taste the best, you can also use frozen fruit in this recipe.
We use organic sugar, organic lemon, organic herbs, and the best fruit available to us when we make this in our farm kitchen.
